hot cross buns... badness

i was inspired by pete's hot cross bun [comment] experience with his mum. so i decided that i too would make hcbs.

they were heavy. and stolid.

they looked and smelt and tasted like hot cross buns. but they didn't have a light fluffy texture.

and my mum tried to make some too using a different recipe.

once again. they were like rocks.

any hints for hot cross buns? good, foolproof recipes?
