A LEAN, GREEN, PROCRASTINATION MACHINE

NaNoWriMo

no nanowrimo...

I suppose the best thing about my "participation" in NaNoWriMo is that, like university studies, it has acted as a driving force for my procrastination.

I've been working (obviously), reading multiple books at once (on Saturday I finished Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell, An Invisible Sign of My Own and The Mezzanine, and now I'm reading Nights At The Circus and Bee Season) and shopping (four new tops at Harbortown). I've also been to two Bikram Yoga classes, redyed my hair, mended some clothes, received my tax refund and gone shopping with said refund.

I didn't mention it earlier, but a couple of weeks ago I finally purchased a washing machine, so I've been getting creepily satisfied by soaking clothes in Napisan, washing them and then ironing the newly dried clothes. Which means that whenever people have visited I've made them look at my brand new washing machine.

a washing machine of my very own!

See! It's white and shiny and a front-loader and I don't have to drive anywhere to wash my clothes!

:::...

I did actually start NaNoWriMo and I tried two different story ideas that I really do want to write, and I even got about 1000 words of one concept down, only to realise that while I have two ideas, I still don't know how I'm going to tell the story I want to tell.

Instead of worrying about NaNoWriMo I went and bought myself a new journal. It's red and covered with linen and is unlined. I realised that I haven't been regularly using a paper journal for almost a year. As you've probably well noticed, I also haven't been blogging very frequently either.

So I'm hoping that I'll start writing and drawing more frequently, which will inevitably lead to more battlecat updates and hopefully if I update battlecat more I'll actually take some more photos.

:::...

I'm going to leave you with a rant about smokers.
<rant>
Specifically smokers who walk along with their cigarette in their hand and don't take a drag for half a block. Then, once the cigarette has burnt down (and hardly been smoked at all), the cigarette holding walker, sorry smoker then throws the butt onto the ground.

Hello! I thought you were addicted?

Huddle around the entrances of buildings and smoke for all I care, but don't walk down a crowded street and let your smoke waft into my face and airways. If you have to smoke, smoke like you mean it (You're coming up for oxygen? What a pussy!) and once you've poisoned your lungs make the effort to put the butt in the trash.

day 1 - 0 words so far, but it's only 3:23 pm.

And suddenly it's upon me... NaNoWriMo!

Unfortunately a particularly scary milestone in the game I'm working on is due at the end of November♥, which means that I might end up attempting to write 50000 words on November 30.

But I'm going to get 1600+ words written tonight. In between work, and dinner and Sex And The City.

I promise.

♥ No, please don't ask me what kind of game I'm working on. If I was to tell you I'd have to kill you immediately afterwards. I'm not kidding.

And it might be a good idea to not ask me about what I'm writing... To tell the truth I haven't really clarified that myself.

This month is going to be so much fun. [I must be insane.]

forward thinking

I only just realised that there's less than two weeks befor NaNoWriMo kicks off, and even though I have a rough idea of what I want to write, I have no idea how I'm going to get it done.

Let's face it kids, I've been saying that I'm going to start regular yoga practice for the last 2 years and I'm still waiting for the week when I actually practice daily... But then again, I did actually get a month's worth of 100 words done, even though I'd write three or four days worth at a time.

I am pretty proud that I wrote a 1500 character description piece the other day. It was so much fun having an idea evolve in my head. Presuming that I can make myself sit down to write, I think that I'm going to really enjoy the NaNoWriMo process.

But I'm going to have to get a couple of things done in the next fortnight:
- Tax Return
- Finish reading Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell
and...
- Ticket to Vietnam paid for (Surprise! I'm going travelling again - for two weeks over Christmas)

pride goeth before a fall

As you may now be aware, I'm beginning to think of myself as a bit of a writer. And as with many budding writers I have delusions of grandeur, so I'm going to write a novel next month.

I'm participating in NaNoWriMo 2004! Why don't you write a novel too?

Hopefully, my first NaNoWriMo effort never sees the light of day. I haven't reread it since November 5, 2002, but I'm definite that it was atrocious. I stupidly attempted to write 50,000 words freehand, whilst travelling. I never got past the first 2000 words as most of my time was spent counting how many words I'd written.

Did I mention that it sucked?

Anyway, let's hope that this year's effort is better. It has to be, because the first one was pitiful. But this one is going to be at least pleasant to work on because I actually have an idea, possibly a basic structure, some characters who are obviously based on people I've known and a computer to write and most importantly, check my word-count with.
