hello minnesota take off

HM_db.jpg
For exciting, grown-up, secret reasons, I can't go to the Big Day Out on Friday, but I am going to be there in spirit.

But as my spirit will not be able to provide a physical presence in front of the CAT Essential Stage at 11am when Hello Minnesota play, I'd love it if you could watch the lovely HM ladies on my behalf.

You'll have to be early though, gates open at 11am and they're due to start playing at exactly the same time, so you'll have to run, run, run (get your drink tags later, 11am is too early to start boozing) and then turn right when you get to the oval.

And if you don't know much about Hello Minnesota, why don't you grab a copy of this week's DB Magazine... Not only are Sarah, Hélène and Aliese interviewed but there are also some pretty photographs of them.

Now I wonder who took the photos?

is it a basket or a bag?

a few years ago i made a very exciting visit to an opshop.

august 1, 2001

one of the best purchases i made was this item ($6).

coveted by many

i don't know whether it is a basket or a bag, but i do know that it is made of little sticks of wood, beads and fishing line. usually i'll carry just my phone, wallet, keys, car stereo face and diary in it, but i have been able to fit a small novel, action sampler camera and other stuff including a fold-up shopping bag in it.

once i was at a friend's house for her birthday fondue party and i discovered that she had a fruit basket made using the same technique. that evening i chose to wear her fruit basket as a hat. luckily i'd brought my basket-bag along.

if i had to draw up statistics for which item of mine got most comments from both men and women, it would be this bag. there's something of a bauhaus arts and crafts element about it which design junkies enjoy.

picture lists

uber-visual-journaller danny gregory suggested a journal diet, you draw everything you own, or eat...

"I like the idea of a journal diet. Draw everything you own. Everything. Every single book, every stick of butter and shoelace. Now that would be a humbling experience. Or just draw everything you eat for a week. You'll be thinner, calmer and happier. "

and keri smith drew her handbag collection.

i find that drawing things definitely makes you appreciate what you do have.

way back in 2002 when i was impoverished in europe, there were times when i felt a little placeless. and i only had one pair of hiking shoes with me.

in order to remind myself of what i could call mine, i drew pictures in my travel journals.

a badly drawn pictogram representing 10 pairs of shoes as owned by me in 2002
so i drew a picture of how many pairs of shoes were back at home in October 2002, Turkey. (obviously the total has increased a bit since my return)

during November, 2002 in Prague i drew pictures of my major posessions (nb: i amended my shoe total to 14 pairs.) i was feeling pretty skint as well placeless, so it was good to remember the stuff i had back home.

but wait, there's more... i own more than just shoes!

the secret rabbit

it seems that i'm suffering from bloggers' block.

i keep on starting entries, but then i realise that there's nothing much that i want to blog about, which i can blog about.

because a while back i said to myself, "pippa, do not blog about boys or jobs!"

while i am nowhere near involved in either full-time work or a relationship, i am, shall we say, hunting an Attractive Rabbit and willing myself to get a Grown Up Full-Time Job.

and you can understand that both topics are really quite preoccupying and as i don't want to write about them, i can't think of much to write.

however, here are some photos from my visit to the beach:

recap

i went on a mini-roadtrip with aliese and denni yesterday. we went and visited helene and her family down at middleton.

you see i enjoyed my last visit to the beach so much that i wanted to go swimming again, even if it was only 22°c.

and today i met karah at the market for breakfast and purchased a shocking pink hat.

the real pink is much, much brighter.

and lue and luke are driving over from melbourne as i write!

so i have to go pick up some photos, get some parsley, clean up and cook tasty vegan friendly soup.

cheap thrills

I went into work to find out about upcoming shifts, only to be told that I wouldn't be getting any hours while business was slow in january!

That means that I'll have to Not Drink Beer* until I start working again. and I'm going to join as many libraries as possible so that I don't need to go to the movies or borrow dvds.

I did visit an op-shop and spent $8 on a pile of good secondhand magazines and straw christmas decorations.

32 different decorations for $1!

The era of Cheap Thrills is nigh... got any good ideas?

surf city

and umbrellas and people and seagulls

yesterday, for the first time in my 24 and a bit years on earth, i went to a beach with scary big waves and was dumped up and down and around (and a little bit to the right).

it was so much fun, and it has encouraged me in my dream of learning to surf! (you'd think that with such a dream i would actually go to the beach regularly)

i took my camera, and given that the weather was perfect and that i was with two of the best looking people i know, i'm hoping that there will be some killer photos.

waiter! there's a fly in my (tomato) soup

i'm hoping that what i suspect isn't true, but there may be fruit fly in my tomatoes. and if there aren't fruitflies, there is a high likelihood of tomato caterpillars being the creepy crawly culprits.

i've frozen the suspect tomatoes in case Primary Industries need to check for samples. and i was trying to keep the garden as organic as possible!

purification ritual

as part of a pre-new year cleaning frenzy, i moved a bookshelf from the boxroom into my bedroom where it was originally placed. finally, i have room for all my books.

there is no order to the stacking yet, but eventually there will be and i will go up to my dad's house and retrieve the boxes of picture books stored there.

the books and magazines from the box room are now obviously awaiting boxes and order.

i opened windows and made up my own cleansing, new year ritual. i burnt a candle and some rosemary for remembrance.

i ate chickpea and tuna salad for dinner and met aliese, sarah, brian and aidan at the prince albert. then aliese, brian and i walked across to mike's house where a debauched cocktail party was in full swing.

and today i am quite successfully recovered...

i've eaten pain au chocolat, watched the bill and done handwashing... and i drew you a picture of my newly arranged books!

now i just have to decide to either go to the beach with julie or to drive down to hindmarsh island...
